Lin Shicheng has stayed in Paris on two occasions: in 1986, during the Festival d’Autonme de Paris, and in 1988. During these two visits, he gave the French public an excellent, but alas ephemeral, impression of the beauty of the pipa. He desired to present with this anthology nine of the most moving pieces of the repertoire. In his selection, the master deliberately privileged the “literary repertoire" which he has ordered musically in such a way as to reveal the richness of the pipa to western music-lovers, leading to a final dramatic treatment with the last track of the recording, taken from the “martial repertoire".
